Academic Center is a club offered to all 6-8 grade students looking for a quiet environment to get work done independently or utilize the time with help from content area teachers.  We will be meeting after school starting on September 27th, Monday-Thursday from 2:22- 3:30 until the end of the year.  Our first meeting will be in room 365.  We are looking forward to another great year together!

After School Sports &

Running Club

After School Sports is happy to return to running club and in person activities.  We are an ALL inclusive, FUN intramural program held Monday through Thursday directly after school.  We will meet in the large gym and then go outside for games like basketball, ultimate frisbee, flag football, soccer, kickball, and many other activities.  

 

In addition to sports, our After School Sports Program also offers a Running Club! Running club will meet and do outdoor runs all school year. Students should check the school tv screens for info on the sports/activities being offered each week.  

Running club requires parent permission to run off campus.  Please use THIS LINK to access the form. 

 

All other activities are pick-up and do not require sign-ups.  

The Dragon

The Dragon is back in 2021-22! Middlesex Middle School's digital literary website is a platform for students of all grade levels to stretch their creative muscles in expressing themselves and share their work with the MMS community. Be it a piece of poetry, a short story, a book/movie review, visual art, or opinion pieces and school news; The Dragon is a digital platform by and for MMS students. 

 The Dragon will meet for the first time on Tuesday, October 5th in room 161 for all interested content creators. Meetings will be bi-weekly throughout the school year, from 2:30-3:15.

All students are welcome. Just join the first meeting on 10/5

Quiz Bowl is an interscholastic team competition that tests players’ general knowledge.  Teams compete by answering questions from every academic subject as well as current events and pop culture.  The team holds weekly practices on Thursdays after school in the cafeteria. 

Students who are interested can come to any practice or ask Mr. Romeo or Mrs. Ivey for more information.

Student council is an after-school club made up of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.  The MMS student council is in charge of organizing events and fundraisers and creating school spirit. We meet after-school in room 234 twice a month from 2:30-3:30.  Students will be able to take the late bus home if needed. 

If your child is interested in joining, please have them join the student council Google Classroom, using code "5xvtk7c" which will have the most up-to-date information. All are welcome!

Camerata Singers (7th/8th)

The Camerata Singers are a special extra-curricular ensemble for ALL 7th and 8th grade students who are looking for an advanced chorus experience. ANY student in chorus, band, orchestra, musical exploration, or unable to enroll in a music choice with a passion for singing is invited to audition. The Camerata Singers perform at the winter and spring concerts, as well as various competitions, assemblies, and special events. Rehearsals will be held before school on THURSDAY and FRIDAY at 7:15AM in the auditorium with Mrs. Sadler.

Camerata will have digital auditions through Flip Grid. The auditions will open on Monday, September 27th and close on Friday, October 8th.  We will post the list that weekend and rehearsals will begin the week of October 11th.

Viva Voce (6th

Viva Voce is a special extra-curricular chorus designed to give ALL sixth grade students the opportunity to perform in a vocal ensemble! Whether currently enrolled in band, orchestra, chorus, music exploration, or unable to fit music into their schedule,  any sixth grader with a passion for singing is invited to audition. Viva Voce performs at the winter and spring concerts, as well as various competitions and special events. Rehearsals are before school on WEDNESDAYS at 7:15AM in the auditorium with Mrs. Parnoff.

Jazz Ensemble

MMS Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned group of members that play the following instruments: Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Electric Guitar, Bass, Drumset, & Piano. The ensemble plays various challenging styles of music, such as; Swing, Latin Jazz, Blues, Funk, Rock, and more. There will be at least 3 performances throughout the school year (December, February, & May). 

Rehearsals will begin 10/12/21

Rockestra

The Rockestra is an extension of the Middlesex Music Program. It offers students intense experiences with rock, pop, blues, and other modern music in small and large group settings. As with any musical ensemble, each musician makes a difference, and therefore, students that wish to join must commit to attending weekly rehearsals and make every effort to attend concerts unless prior arrangements have been made. No audition is required to join Rockestra, though auditions for specific parts/solos may be made at the discretion of the director during the year. 

 

 

We'll meet on Thursday mornings at 7:15 in the auditorium starting October 7th.

Mindfulness Club

Begins Sept. 28th

Join us as we practice mindfulness for 20 minutes before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mindfulness practices bring awareness to ourselves, increases focus, reduces stress, and increases empathy and understanding of others. All MMS students and teachers are welcome to drop-in and practice together before school every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:20am until 7:40am. The daily mindfulness practice will be held outside behind the MMS Cafe by the 9/11 memorial rock and benches in good weather and in the library/media center during inclement weather (if it’s raining, or below 45 degrees). We will explore different daily practices of mindfulness including Wim Hof breathing, mental imagery, walking meditation, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, sitting meditation, singing bowls, yoga (sun salutations), and pranayama breathing. All you need to take part is comfortable, warm clothing and a towel to sit on. Our first “join in” will be Tuesday, Sept. 28th! Email Heather Maher for more information at HMaher@darienps.org
