Welcome to MMS!

This is such an exciting time for your 5th grader! Here is a general timeline of activities that help kick off your students' eventual arrival at MMS in the Fall!

Please access the  2025 Welcome Letter to 5th-grade parents that outlines the 5th to 6th Grade Transition Process. Contained in this letter are specifics around Math placement and Music and World Language choices.  Please have the MMS Course Selection Form completed by March 1, 2025.

The 5th Grade Parents MMS Orientation Night  was held February  12th, 2025 at 6:00pm.   We discussed courses, teams, the scheduling process, and answered parent questions.  Below is a recording of the presentation.

MMS 5th Grade Parent Night

Information about the various departments and departmental curriculum may be found on the district's "Teaching and Learning" webpage.

Parents of incoming students with a 504 or IEP are encouraged to review the slideshow from the Parent Coffee on February 26, 2025.

Each Elementary School will visit MMS. The incoming 6th grade class will enjoy a fieldtrip to the middle school for a morning program that consists of a tour and presentations by MMS students and staff. MMS Teachers/Staff will also be meeting with the elementary school staff to share information to facilitate the transition. Below is the elementary school schedule for visiting MMS:

April 7 - Hindley
April 8 - Royle
April 9 - Tokeneke
April 10 - Holmes
April 11 - Ox Ridge

As the Spring 2025 dates for orientation visits get closer, we will post a slide show for students and families on this web page.

Required Summer Readings & Math Work :

All incoming grade 6 students are expected to read "Restart" by Gordan Korman and 2 books of their choosing.
Math packets and enrichment will be available on the Summer Math Packets website.

Optional: Darien Summer School offerings, including the Voyagers transition program.

Placement and Scheduling:

Placement and scheduling begin in the Spring and continue into the Summer. As this is a very complex process, we do not honor requests for teachers or teams.

In order to facilitate scheduling for next year, it is essential that you share your child’s Music and World Language preferences with us. Please discuss and review the opportunities available at MMS with your child.  Please have the MMS Course Selection Form completed by March 1, 2025.

Math Placement: We are excited to partner with you as your child transitions to middle school and begins their journey in our math program. To assist you, we have created a comprehensive Math Department Website where you can find all the information you need about:

  • Math Levels: Learn about the different math courses offered at Middlesex Middle School.
  • Placement Criteria: Understand the process and criteria used to determine the most suitable math level for your child.
  • Course Progressions: Explore the sequence of math courses from middle school through high school and beyond.
  • Additional Resources: Access materials and links to support your child’s learning.

We encourage you to review the information on our website and familiarize yourself with the opportunities available.

If you have any questions about the placement process, criteria, or your student’s placement, please feel free to reach out to the math department chair for further guidance.

We look forward to a successful school year!
