Dear Middlesex Families,

What a beautiful Kindness Week we’ve had here at MMS! This week kicked off with an activity in Flex during which students watched a video made by the DHS Wave Strong Club and then jotted down their own reflections on kindness; those reflections were turned into an “MMS” collage by volunteers from the MPA. On Wednesday afternoon, several students participated in making beautiful centerpiece floral arrangements and decorations for the Mather Senior Center Valentine’s Day Party as well as for our town First Responders. I am grateful to the Community Outreach and the Community and Belonging Committees for cultivating these opportunities for our students to impactfully contribute kindness to our community. As we aspire to in the Vision of the Graduate, these moments are examples of our students exemplifying empathy and independence, as they cultivate meaningful relationships and see their ability to have a positive impact on their community and world.

This week our eighth graders participated in lessons with School Counselors Jackie Petrasanta and Greg Carnevalli preparing them for the Career Day on February 27. All eighth graders took the Holland Code and explored three different career options based on their Holland Code. Parents can check out Naviance with your child for more information!

Congratulations to the 5-6 Jazz Lab and MMS Jazz Ensemble, who performed beautifully in the Sweet Night of Jazz concert in the MMS auditorium last night! All performers showcased their talent and hard work and put on a great show.  The concert video will be posted on the music department website.

I’m also excited to share with you a Save the Date! We are excited to welcome NY Times bestselling author Jennifer Wallace (Never Enough and Mattering) to our district on Thursday March 5.  Jennifer will discuss how to address toxic achievement culture and how building a culture of mattering can combat loneliness and despair among young people. Some details are listed below, with more to follow:

  • A session for all DPS faculty will be held from 3-4pm on Thursday 3/5 the DHS Library.
  • An additional session for parents and caregivers will take place from 6:30–7:30 p.m. in the DHS auditorium.

Lastly, don’t miss your chance to see The Harlem Wizards take on The Blue Wave Home Team, including our own talented Darien teachers and administration with reps from MMS! This is a basketball extravaganza loaded with laugh-out-loud audience participation. Never in the history of sport will the losing team have so much fun! The Blue Wave Booster Club is excited to announce the return of this three-time sell-out event taking place at Darien High School on NEW DATE Sunday, March 1st at 2pm! Tickets are available here and are expected to sell out quickly.

We look forward to seeing our students back at MMS on Tuesday, February 24. (Monday February, 23 is a district-wide Professional Learning day.)

Happy Valentine’s Day (2/14) and Happy Chinese New Year (2/17)!

Wishing you abundance and peace,
