Dear MMS Families,
Today marks the first day of the third quarter! Our seventh and eighth graders started their third quarterly elective today (Art, STEM, Health, and Computers/Global Innovators). Students also participated in our periodic Aimsweb math and literacy screening assessments this week; we use this data to monitor student performance and inform interventions through our MTSS process (multi-tiered systems of support). As we begin the second half of the year, we also begin preparing for the transitions ahead: We are looking forward to welcoming fifth graders up for a preview performance of Bye, Bye Birdie on Tuesday next week. We will be hosting our Fifth Grade Open House for Parents/Guardians in person at MMS on February 10, with a specific 5th-to-6th Math Transition Night virtually on February 24. For our eighth graders, school counselors from DHS have been visiting students here to share information about the course selection process. DHS hosted their Elective Expo for parents/guardians today and 8th-to-9th Math Transition Night last night; as Mrs. Dunn shared in her message last week, the Ninth Grade Curriculum Night for parents will be at 7:00 on January 28 in the DHS Auditorium.
Be sure to get your tickets for Bye Bye Birdie (Youth Edition), which will be performed at MMS from 1/29-1/31 ConcordTheatricals describes the show as "A loving send-up of the 1950s, small-town America, teenagers, and rock & roll, Bye Bye Birdie remains as fresh and vibrant as ever. Teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie has been drafted, so he chooses All-American girl Kim MacAfee for a very public farewell kiss. Featuring a tuneful high-energy score, plenty of great parts for teens, and a hilarious script, Birdie continues to thrill audiences around the world." You won’t want to miss it!

Lastly, we are pleased to welcome a counseling practicum student, Ben De Weaver, to our school community. Ben is currently in his first year of the Counseling Program at Sacred Heart University. He brings experience working with middle school-aged students through his roles as a personal aide, summer camp staff member, and babysitter. Ben attended MMS and is excited to give back to the school community. Ben will be working primarily with 6th grade, while also supporting students across other grade levels as needed; he looks forward to working with our students for the remainder of the school year.
Wishing you a safe and cozy weekend ahead,
