Dear MMS Families,

For a four day week, the start of second quarter was packed with excitement at MMS! The first thing you may hear from your child(ren) today is that we had an unexpected fire alarm this afternoon during seventh grade lunch. I am so proud of how efficiently our students and teachers exited the building and organized on the fields for attendance, and I am grateful to our police and fire departments for their quick and diligent response and partnership with our maintenance team and administration. It appears that a brief change in water pressure in a pipe led to the alarm sounding; upon clearance we returned to the building for the rest of the day.

On Monday, students heard Tanner Clarke speak about their ability to find one second of strength at a time as they overcome distractions and live intentionally toward their fullest potential. Tanner also spoke with families and community members that evening; For those of you who were not able to join us, Tanner did share this folder of resources from his parent talk. Thank you to the community partners The YWCA, Thriving Youth, The Depot, The Y, Wave Strong, and OK to Delay for supporting this opportunity. You may also be interested in checking out the recorded conversation the MPA hosted on October 24 with author middle school educator and author of Finding the Magic in Middle School, Chris Balme. On Wednesday, our sixth graders rocked out in an assembly with Mr. Nicky, a historian and musician who brings history to life for students through collaborative songwriting.

I also want to highlight here two fantastic opportunities to support and celebrate our students’ great work!
Students from Ms. Cygan’s first quarter Healthy Living class have organized a supplies drive to collect first aid supplies to provide people who are homeless with basic items. Please consider donating bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, cold compresses, medical tape, or medical gloves. Items will be collected in the Rotunda from Monday, Nov. 10th through Friday, Nov. 14th and donated to Pacific House in Stamford.

Looking ahead, I will email you next week when grades are posted for Q1. Picture Retake and Makeup day is November 19; please see this flyer with directions and a form to be completed if your child will be retaking their picture. No sign up is required in advance. This form is also available on the MMS website if you have difficulty accessing the link; if you or your child misplaced the proof sheet and require an access code, please call the main office for assistance. Finally, A quick reminder also that the lanes of the parking lot closest to Hollow Tree Ridge Road should not be used for pick up and drop off. Drivers who will turn right upon exit should stay in the lane closest to MMS front entrance, and drivers who will turn left upon exit should adhere to the traffic cones and enter the first lane of the parking lot.

Phew!
Have a great weekend,

Kate
